{"id":108549,"date":"2016-01-12T00:05:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T22:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=108549"},"modified":"2016-01-12T08:33:59","modified_gmt":"2016-01-12T06:33:59","slug":"economists-cant-convince-me-i-was-wrong-zuma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/108549\/economists-cant-convince-me-i-was-wrong-zuma\/","title":{"rendered":"Economists can&#8217;t convince me I was wrong: Zuma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Jacob Zuma has said that he has spoken to economists who could not convince him that Treasury would have collapsed had David van Rooyen remained in his appointment as minister of finance.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday (11 January) the rand was in recovery mode again having hit <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/108509\/rand-tanks-to-new-lows\/\" target=\"_blank\">R17.99<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a new record low &#8211; against the dollar late on Sunday night as Asian markets opened.<\/p>\n<p>This followed a major sell-off out of Japan, and remarks from the Zuma\u00a0that markets overreacted and people exaggerated when he sacked finance minister, Nhlanhla Nene.<\/p>\n<p>Zuma infamously sacked Nene in December 2015, replacing him with unknown ANC back-seater, David van Rooyen. This led to a collapse in the market, pushing the rand to record lows against the dollar.<\/p>\n<p>Following emergency meetings with senior ANC leadership and the South African banking sector, Zuma back-tracked and replaced Van Rooyen with former finance minister Pravin Gordhan three days later.<\/p>\n<p>Zuma called the market reaction &#8211; and the reaction from politicians, business leaders and South African citizen &#8211; an &#8220;overreaction&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople did not consider many things,\u201d Zuma\u00a0said. \u201cThe rand had been going down when Nene was there. It had been going down for months and months. It was not triggered by the decision (to remove Nene).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe removal of Nene was \u2018not breaking the economy\u2019&#8230;People didn\u2019t understand what was happening and they exaggerated the issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Zuma told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PIe4IyVsQSM\" target=\"_blank\">SABC<\/a> in an interview on Sunday: &#8220;He (van Rooyen) was going to come into a very effective, functioning department. I don&#8217;t know why people thought that when he comes in, the treasury is going to fall down. I don&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have talked with a few economists, they can&#8217;t convince me that the department was going to fall.
