{"id":108571,"date":"2016-01-11T12:33:44","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T10:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=108571"},"modified":"2016-01-11T12:33:44","modified_gmt":"2016-01-11T10:33:44","slug":"racist-oxford-does-not-have-enough-black-professors-south-african-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/108571\/racist-oxford-does-not-have-enough-black-professors-south-african-student\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Racist&#8221; Oxford does not have enough black professors: South African student"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African student, Ntokozo Qwabe, says that the University of Oxford in England is racist because of its lack of black professors and current curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Qwabe<span data-reactid=\".1.0.0\">\u00a0is the co-founder of Rhodes Must Fall In Oxford \u2013 &#8220;an organisation determined to decolonise the space, the curriculum, and the institutional memory at, and to fight inter-sectional oppression within, Oxford&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The campaign was born out of the Rhodes Must Fall \u2013 #RhodesMustFall \u2013 protest movement originally directed against a statue at the University of Cape Town (UCT) commemorating Cecil Rhodes that began in March 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2015, following a UCT Council vote, the statue was removed.<\/p>\n<p>Qwabe, a former law student at KwaZulu-Natal, received the Rhodes Scholarship to further his studies at England\u2019s Oxford University, in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with SABC, Qwabe said that the struggle goes beyond a statue, pointing to a &#8216;structural violence&#8217; within the world&#8217;s most recognised tertiary institution through its curriculum, and the lack of black professors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those things are not just exceptions, they go to the very heart of how Oxford is configured, and how Oxford, as a space is, to be quite frank, racist. That blatant, violent, assault and racism is unacceptable at a university that purports to be inclusive,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Decolonise-Oxford.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-91102\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-91102\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Decolonise-Oxford.jpg\" alt=\"Decolonise Oxford\" width=\"479\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Decolonise-Oxford.jpg 480w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Decolonise-Oxford-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oriel College, a constituent college of the University of Oxford, has put up a sign at the entrance of the building in question saying that it does not in any way condone or glorify the view or actions of Cecil Rhodes.<\/p>\n<p>The sign notes that the building was completed in 1911, and was funded by a bequest from Cecil Rhodes.
