Capetonians can expect to roadblocks daily from now on with the launch of a dedicated unit aimed at nabbing the bad guys.<\/p>\n
The roadblock unit’s focus was on drinking and driving, stolen vehicles, and illegal street racing. It would seize illegal firearms and drugs, and track down those attempting to evade the law.<\/p>\n
The 18-member team hit the streets for the first time on Thursday night, setting up a vehicle check point in Athlone and Belhar.<\/p>\n
Between 21:00 on Thursday and 02:00 on Friday, they arrested six people for drunken driving. Someone was arrested for reckless or negligent driving, while another person was held for resisting arrest.<\/p>\n
The team consisted of officers from the city\u2019s traffic service, metro police, law enforcement, and the provincial traffic department.<\/p>\n
The city\u2019s safety and security mayoral committee member, JP Smith, said police were supporting the unit.<\/p>\n
In recent years, services had been stretched by an increasing workload thanks to service delivery protests, gang violence, and land invasions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe result is that we have not been able to have as many roadblocks as we would like. This unit is a step towards rectifying that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
He envisaged a situation where justice was swiftly meted out to errant road users.<\/p>\n
