{"id":110069,"date":"2016-01-26T11:42:23","date_gmt":"2016-01-26T09:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=110069"},"modified":"2016-01-26T11:50:21","modified_gmt":"2016-01-26T09:50:21","slug":"watch-motorist-pulled-over-for-disappearing-number-plates-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/110069\/watch-motorist-pulled-over-for-disappearing-number-plates-in-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch: Motorist pulled over for &#8216;disappearing&#8217; number plates in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new video has emerged showing a motorist being pulled over in South Africa for having a device which hides his registration plates.<\/p>\n<p>All vehicles are required to have two number plates &#8211; one at the back and one at the front.<\/p>\n<p>There are numerous ways to avoid being picked up by a speed camera &#8211; reflective spray, laser jammers or flipped plates being some.<\/p>\n<p>However, South African law states that it is <a href=\"http:\/\/carinsurance.arrivealive.co.za\/where-does-the-law-stipulate-do-i-need-to-attach-the-number-plates-to-my-vehicle.php\" target=\"_blank\">illegal to obscure a vehicle&#8217;s number plate<\/a>\u00a0(with only temporary obstructions like bicycle racks allowed), and traffic officials have warned that using reflective \u00a0spray or other measures could lead to charges of defeating the ends of justice.<\/p>\n<p>A report by Carte Blanche estimated that as many as 1 in 5 vehicle number plates in Gauteng are cloned -with over 350 variations of legal plates allowed in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Metro Police pointed to a rise in illegal plates due to the implementation of e-tolls in Gauteng, in December 2013, a highly unpopular system among motorists.<\/p>\n<p>The video posted to Youtube on Tuesday, shows a shutter type device on a BMW vehicle with Gauteng registration plates.
