The Democratic Alliance (DA) said as many as 20,000 members have taken part in a march through the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Senior DA members, including party leader Mmusi Maimane, led the procession, which began at the Westgate transport hub.<\/p>\n

Maimane said that the party is pushing for legislation to make it easier for people to obtain employment.<\/p>\n

The march is part of a new campaign focusing on economic growth and job creation, with the unemployment rate currently above 25% in South Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have shown where we govern that our plans and policies create jobs and reduce unemployment. Where we govern, unemployment is the lowest in South Africa,\u201d said Maimane.<\/p>\n

He said that since Jacob Zuma became President, over 1.8 million South Africans have joined the ranks of the unemployed.<\/p>\n

DA federal chairman and mayoral candidate for the Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip said: “Our blue wave will sweep the whole country, President Zuma has destroyed jobs.”<\/p>\n

“We march today for jobs. We march for the freedom that having work brings.<\/p>\n

We are here today because we believe that the hope for our nation, that the only way out of poverty, is always through a job,” said Maimane.<\/p>\n

“We want to make job creation a new national cause – something that will unite the whole country in a massive effort to secure our futures.”<\/p>\n

The DA lead said that South Africans will have to opportunity to vote for such a government in their municipality or Metro later in the year.<\/p>\n

“If you give us your vote, I give you my word that we will work harder for you than any government you\u2019ve had before. We will make it our priority to get your city, your province and this country working again,” he said.<\/p>\n
