{"id":110329,"date":"2016-01-27T19:30:35","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T17:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=110329"},"modified":"2016-02-22T13:50:58","modified_gmt":"2016-02-22T11:50:58","slug":"5-ultra-rich-black-south-africans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/110329\/5-ultra-rich-black-south-africans\/","title":{"rendered":"5 ultra-rich black South Africans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new ranking of the world&#8217;s wealthiest individuals puts Nigerian cement mogul Aliko Dangote among the\u00a0top 50 richest people, while dominating in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The self-made billionaire\u00a0has a net worth of $14.3 billion, according to Wealth-X, as reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/50-richest-people-on-earth-2016-1\" target=\"_blank\">Business Insider<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of Dangote&#8217;s wealth stems from his stake in Dangote Cement, which is publicly traded on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n<p>So how far behind Mr Dangote are South Africa&#8217;s wealthiest black citizens, and who are they?<\/p>\n<p>In November, Forbes ranked the 50 richest people in Africa in 2015 \u2013 and 16 South Africans made the list, including Patrice Motsepe, placing 6th, and Cyril Ramaphosa at 12th.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Patrice Motsepe<\/h3>\n<p>Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe is a South African mining magnate. The once Gauteng premier was appointed by President Jacob Zuma as Minister of Human Settlements in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Upon leaving the public sector, Sexwale founded Mvelaphanda Holdings &#8211; a company of which he is still executive chairman.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Sexwale declared his wealth to be approximately R2 billion.<\/p>\n<p>His net worth is put at<a href=\"http:\/\/cloudninebulletin.co.za\/top-five-wealthiest-blacks-in-south-africa-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> $200 million<\/strong><\/a> (R3.27 billion).<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, it was reported that Sexwale had bought his own personal tropical island in the Indian Ocean for $70 million.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/TokyoSexwale.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-110353\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-110353\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/TokyoSexwale.jpg\" alt=\"TokyoSexwale\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/TokyoSexwale.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/TokyoSexwale-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sipho Nkosi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sipho Nkosi is the CEO of Exxaro Resources, a diversified group with interests in the coal, titanium dioxide, ferrous and energy markets.<\/p>\n<p>Nkosi is set to retire as CEO in March after seven years on the job &#8211; having joined Exxaro in November 2007, one year after the company listed on the JSE.<\/p>\n<p>Exxaro&#8217;s share price has taken a beating in recent years, an particularly in 2015, along with other resource stocks.<\/p>\n<p>However, the its share price was up nearly 6% in trade on Wednesday (27 January) to R53.77, having hit a low of R37.69 in 2015 &#8211; and from R29 in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Nkosi was paid a salary of R16.84 million by the company, including R5.5 million in gains on management share schemes.<\/p>\n<p>The Sunday Times rich list, published in late 2015, stated that Nkosi&#8217;s holding in Exxaro Resources was 2.7%. The company has a market cap of R<span class=\"smallNr\">19.26 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His net worth is put at around <strong>R2.7 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" operator MTN, Phuthuma Nhleko was re-appointed as executive chairman of the company late last year to deal with a multi-billion dollar fine issued by the Nigerian government.<\/p>\n<p>Nhleko has a 2.49% holding in MTN&#8217;s broad-based black economic empowerment scheme, MTN Zakhele, which made its debut on the JSE in November 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Nhleko is the chairman and co-founder of the Pembani Group, which recently merged with Shanduka Group which has stakes in 29 businesses,\u00a0 creating a business with a portfolio value in excess of R9 billion.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, Nhleko has
