ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe says that the ruling party is aiming to win back the City of Cape Town in the upcoming municipal elections.<\/p>\n
A date for the election has not yet been set and is believed to be taking place between May and August of this year.<\/p>\n
The ANC reduced its majority in the national elections in 2014 to 62.1%, from 65.9% in the 2009 election.<\/p>\n
The DA increased its share of the vote from 16.7% to 22.2%, while the newly formed Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) obtained 6.4% of the vote.<\/p>\n
In the Western Cape, The DA attracted more than 1.24 million votes out of a total 4.1 million countrywide – holding 57.26% of the national vote in the province versus the ANC’s 34%, and 2.3% for the EFF.<\/span><\/p>\n In provincial elections, The DA took a 59.38% majority, versus 32.89% for the ANC, and 2.11% for the EFF.<\/span><\/p>\n The DA won the the City of Cape Town provincial elections with 61.5% of the total vote.<\/p>\n In the 2011 local government elections, the DA received 60.92% of the vote, against 32.8% for the ANC.<\/p>\n Mantashe told a press briefing on Wednesday that the ANC \u201cis confident of retaining all metropolitan municipalities we currently govern and will be fighting to win the City of Cape Town\u201d.<\/p>\n Many political commentators believe that the ANC faces stiff opposition for power in three major metros<\/a> including Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay.<\/p>\n President Jacob Zuma admitted<\/a> earlier this month that the local elections would be one of the toughest for the ANC.<\/p>\n ANC could lose \u2018several important cities\u2019 in 2016<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nMore on politics<\/h3>\n
