{"id":110689,"date":"2016-01-31T19:30:14","date_gmt":"2016-01-31T17:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=110689"},"modified":"2016-01-29T15:46:43","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T13:46:43","slug":"how-much-money-taxi-drivers-really-make-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/110689\/how-much-money-taxi-drivers-really-make-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How much money taxi drivers really make in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New light has been shed on how much minibus taxi drivers earn in South Africa &#8211; and it&#8217;s surprisingly low.<\/p>\n<p>Alpheus Mlalazi, general secretary of the Ntional Taxi Alliance told <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/primediabroadcasting\/national-taxi-alliance-surprised-by-labour-ministers-plans-of-minimum-wage-for-taxi-drivers\" target=\"_blank\">Tak702<\/a> that drivers are paid in accordance with various local taxi associations and their operational level ,and also depending\u00a0on their routes.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the taxi industry, through the labour relations act, is under sectoral determination whereby minimum wages across the board is around <strong>R1,400<\/strong> per month.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that the taxi industry has been found to pay well above that wage.<\/p>\n<p>His comments come following reports that the Labour Department is looking into implementing minimum wages for taxi drivers.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about whether taxi drivers get paid per passenger: Mlalazi said that payment methods vary from one association to another. He said some receive a fixed salary of anything between <strong>R800 &#8211; R1,000<\/strong> per week.<\/p>\n<p>Some, he said, are paid in accordance with the takings of the taxi \u2013 between 25%-30% of the takings per week.<\/p>\n<p>BusinessTech has spoken to two Soweto residents who said that many taxi owners rent out their taxis to drivers for a fixed fee per month &#8211; <strong>R10,000<\/strong>.
