border: 1px solid black; float: right; padding: 0.25em 0.75em; margin-left: 0.5em;\">\n<p><strong>The BusinessTech basket<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apples (1.5kg); Cabbage (one head); Coca Cola (2 litres); Eggs (6, extra large); Flour (self-raising, 2.5kg); Maize (white, 2.5kg); Margarine (500g spread); Milk (full-cream, 2 litres); Rice (white, par-boiled, 2kg); and Sugar (white, 2.5kg).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The average basket &#8211; containing 10 food items such as apples, cabbage, maize, milk and eggs &#8211; would have cost between R187 and R224 in August, depending on where you shop.<\/p>\n<p>The same basket today costs between R214 and R240 (7% &#8211; exceeding the inflation rates of the consumer price index (CPI).<\/p>\n<p>According to AgriSA, white maize prices have increased by 150% over the past 12 months, with yellow maize prices up by 80%.<\/p>\n<p>The barometer measuring the basic food basket (which contains basic food items in bulk) has increased by R149 since November, the City Press reported.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_111729\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111729\" class=\"wp-image-111729\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Food-price-changes-City-Press.jpg\" alt=\"Food price changes (City Press)\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Food-price-changes-City-Press.jpg 1502w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Food-price-changes-City-Press-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Food-price-changes-City-Press-768x515.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Food-price-changes-City-Press-1024x687.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Food-price-changes-City-Press-640x430.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-111729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Food price changes (City Press)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Earlier economic projections in January predicted that food prices in the country would likely shoot up by another 10% by the middle of 2016 (hitting 25% higher by April 2017).<\/p>\n<p>AgriSA says food prices will be 15% higher by the end of 2016, affecting the poorest of the poor &#8211;
