{"id":111965,"date":"2016-02-10T09:12:39","date_gmt":"2016-02-10T07:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=111965"},"modified":"2016-02-10T09:12:39","modified_gmt":"2016-02-10T07:12:39","slug":"how-sa-business-plans-to-save-the-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/111965\/how-sa-business-plans-to-save-the-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"How SA business plans to save the economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Business leaders have offered an 8-point plan on how South Africa can avoid a rating cut to junk and further economic turmoil &#8211; and it involves taking on a lot of taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Following meetings with finance minister Pravin Gordhan, over 100 business leaders recently met with President Jacob Zuma to discuss ways in which companies and government can come together to help fix up the economy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdlive.co.za\/business\/2016\/02\/10\/business-offers-plan-to-stave-off-downgrade\" target=\"_blank\">According to a report by BDLive<\/a>,\u00a0as part of a solution, SA business came to the party with an 8-point plan, detailing goals and concessions the private sector was willing to come on board with.<\/p>\n<p>Treasury said it will evaluate the suggestions, which involve pain for business through taxes and for government through cost-cutting.<\/p>\n<p>The plan includes an acceptance of tax increases in the 2016\/17 budget expected later this month.<\/p>\n<p>While businesses accept an increase in the marginal tax rates for wealthy individuals, the plea was made to make further tax hikes broad-based &#8211; such as a hike in VAT or the fuel levy.<\/p>\n<p>According to BDLive, the other seven points are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uniting behind a cohesive narrative and plan;<\/li>\n<li>Over-delivery on fiscal consolidation;<\/li>\n<li>More effective management of state-owned enterprises, by appointing, for example, professionals to their boards;<\/li>\n<li>Accelerated public private-partnerships;<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0review of legislative implementation to ensure consistency and certainty;<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring that labour legislation contributes to inclusive growth, especially of the youth;<\/li>\n<li>and the appointment of a standing anti-corruption committee to combat graft in both the public and private sectors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Business has reportedly said it will support government in the &#8220;tough decisions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in addressing the business leaders, Zuma said that South Africa\u00a0has a lot of positive attributes, but that the short-term economic outlook was not inspiring.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We must abandon the &#8216;business as usual&#8217; thinking,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining.
