{"id":112049,"date":"2016-02-10T14:10:56","date_gmt":"2016-02-10T12:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=112049"},"modified":"2016-02-10T14:10:56","modified_gmt":"2016-02-10T12:10:56","slug":"sa-taxpayers-must-pay-for-nkandla-anc-supporters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/112049\/sa-taxpayers-must-pay-for-nkandla-anc-supporters\/","title":{"rendered":"SA taxpayers must pay for Nkandla: ANC supporters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A large portion\u00a0of ANC supporters believe that South African taxpayers should foot the bill for Nkandla, president Jacob Zuma&#8217;s private home in Kwa Zulu-Natal.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to the findings from a new poll conducted by Ipsos, which posed the question: &#8220;President Jacob Zuma is entitled to a private home regardless of the cost to taxpayers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More than four in every 10 adult South Africans (42%) disagreed with the notion that Zuma&#8217;s private home should be funded by taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>Opinions have become more negative during the six months since April\/May 2015 \u2013 at which time 37% of South Africans disagreed with the statement, Ipsos said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-112051\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-112051\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_3.jpg\" alt=\"Nkandla_3\" width=\"600\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_3.jpg 646w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_3-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_3-640x273.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><span class=\"PressReleaseStory\">Majorities of DA and EFF supporters were strongly opposed to taxpayers footing the bill, and only a third of ANC supporters shared this opinion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"PressReleaseStory\">However\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0and perhaps surprising given the controversy\u00a0the issue\u00a0has caused &#8211;\u00a041% of ANC supporters believe that Zuma&#8217;s private residence should be paid by taxes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-112053\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-112053\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_2.jpg\" alt=\"Nkandla_2\" width=\"602\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_2.jpg 646w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_2-300x111.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_2-640x236.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/a><span class=\"PressReleaseStory\">A total of 3,617 personal face-to-face interviews were conducted with randomly selected adult South Africans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ipsos found that <span class=\"PressReleaseStory\">people living in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and North West were the most supportive of funding Zumas residence, while the strongest negative reactions came from residents in the Northern Cape, Western Cape and the Free State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-112055\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-112055\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_1.jpg\" alt=\"Nkandla_1\" width=\"602\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_1.jpg 646w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_1-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Nkandla_1-640x273.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/a>On Tuesday, President Jacob Zuma\u2019s lawyer told the Constitutional Court that he accepted the findings of a report by the public protector into Nkandla &#8211; which stated that the president should pay back a portion of the money spent on upgrades to his house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe accept that the president is required to carry out remedial action.
