{"id":112145,"date":"2016-02-11T12:06:21","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T10:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=112145"},"modified":"2016-02-11T12:06:21","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T10:06:21","slug":"prepare-for-substantial-collection-activity-and-legal-action-on-e-tolls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/112145\/prepare-for-substantial-collection-activity-and-legal-action-on-e-tolls\/","title":{"rendered":"Prepare for &#8216;substantial collection activity&#8217; and legal action on e-tolls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Electronic Toll Collection company (ETC) has hit back at Outa and the JPSA for their <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/government\/154640-sanral-using-private-debt-collectors-against-non-paying-e-toll-users-outa.html\">statements on the recent SMS threats<\/a><\/strong> motorists received regarding their unpaid e-tolls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContinued distortion of the facts and bluster by entities purporting to be all-knowing is starting to wear thin,\u201d said ETC chief operations officer Mark Ridgway.<\/p>\n<p>SMS messages started going out earlier this year, listing motorists\u2019 outstanding e-toll balance and discounted bill, with the following warning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Failure to settle outstanding e-tolls will result in a loss of this discount, vehicle listing, and collection action being commenced against you for the full amount due.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This was later followed up with:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We have noted your refusal to pay your outstanding e-toll balance. Your vehicle details are being submitted for listing, and legal action will commence with costs incurred.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Outa said these messages were illegal, and revealed that calls to the numbers listed in the SMS were routed to private debt collectors.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">We will collect: ETC<\/h3>\n<p>Ridgway said Sanral has stated that the recovery of public money will be ongoing and that there will be consequences for non-payment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn line with the new dispensation, a discount of 60% was offered to road users who settled their outstanding debt incurred prior to 1 September 2015.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time left to ensure this discount is taken advantage of is fast running out.
