If you’re thinking of splashing out on Valentine’s day, and have over R50,000 to spare, this is what you can get your date to impress\u00a0him or her with\u00a0ability to burn money.<\/p>\n

Valentine’s Day is one of the most commercial days of the year, with people across the world spending billions of dollars on chocolates, teddy bears, flowers, perfumes\/colognes and dinners.<\/p>\n

And don’t forget the card.<\/p>\n

While it’s easy to find ways to blow millions on the most expensive items of all time<\/a>\u00a0– South Africa also offers some options for the wealthy\u00a0who are full of love (of material things).<\/p>\n

Flowers – R1,400<\/strong><\/p>\n

In South Africa, the Gloriosa lily, selling for around R115 a flower, is one of the most expensive flowers you can find locally (R1,400 for a dozen).<\/p>\n

Valentine’s Day is usually a day for roses – and lilies often symbolise purity and chastity. But in ancient Greek times the lily was linked more to eroticism and sexuality, so really, it fits in quite well..<\/p>\n

They’re also poisonous and possibly fatal if ingested, but don’t read too much into that.<\/p>\n

Chocolate and Champagne – R11,500<\/strong><\/p>\n

You could either spend R4,000 buying one 5g La Madeline au Truffle from Knipschildt and hoping it gets here in time (and in one piece) – or you could head to a more local chocolatier and pick up an assortment of truffles for R500 per 100 grams.<\/p>\n

The Chocolate Tier offers a 90-piece chocolate box-set for R649 – and you can pick up a Louis Roederer Cristal Brut Vintage 1990 champagne for R11,000<\/p>\n

Teddy bear – R11,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

You could go to the closest toy stor and buy the biggest teddy bear you can find (which can retail as high as R5,000 if it’s big enough) – or you could look locally for a Taunina bear<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Taunina bears, created by Capetonian Rudo Zenda, are hand-embroidered works of art in their own right. Hand-stitched and sold in dollars, at $720 you’re looking at over R11,000 for a creation.<\/p>\n

Perfume\u00a0or Cologne – R27,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you’re going to splash out on something to make your partner smell nice, there is a wide variety of perfumes and colognes available online.<\/p>\n

Looking at the costliest haul, though, you can grab a his and hers fragrance from Clive Christian, which would set you back R27,000 a piece.<\/p>\n

Dinner – R3,200<\/strong><\/p>\n

While you will find many expensive dining experiences across the globe, in South Africa you can find an elite meal at The Test Kitchen in Cape Town.<\/p>\n

For R1,600 per person you can enjoy a gormound menu paired with wine at the restaurant which has won mutliple “best of SA” awards.<\/p>\n

If you’re based in Joburg and don’t want to travel to the Mother City, you can enjoy a R1,650 per person meal at the Saxon’s Five Hundred – paired with wines.<\/p>\n
