{"id":11249,"date":"2012-05-02T01:01:45","date_gmt":"2012-05-01T23:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=11249"},"modified":"2012-05-02T14:09:29","modified_gmt":"2012-05-02T12:09:29","slug":"dell-ultrabooks-see-ultra-sales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/hardware\/11249\/dell-ultrabooks-see-ultra-sales\/","title":{"rendered":"Dell ultrabooks see ultra-sales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Dell Inc\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2277-Dell\">Dell Inc&#8217;s<\/a> new ultra-thin laptop computer meant to rival <a title=\"Apple Inc\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1648-Apple\">Apple Inc&#8217;s<\/a> popular MacBook Air is doing much better than the company expected.<\/p>\n<p>Sales of the XPS 13 ultrabook, which hit store shelves on February 28, are now more than double the company&#8217;s internal forecast, driven by strong demand from both consumers and big corporations, Dell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With this product, we went aggressive with the forecast,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dell product marketing director Alison Gardner said. &#8220;Since we started shipping it to customers, XPS 13 has exceeded our expectations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Almost half of the sales of the XPS 13, which starts at $999, were to corporations, she added.<\/p>\n<p>Dell&#8217;s so-called enterprise business has doubled in the past five to six years and now represents half of the company&#8217;s profit.<\/p>\n<p>While Gardner declined to reveal the exact number of units sold so far or the internal forecast, she said Dell is seeing a lot of sales momentum for the super-thin category of laptops.<\/p>\n<p>PC manufacturers plunged into ultrabooks &#8211; a super-thin category of laptops that chipmaker Intel Corp helped create &#8211; to attract consumers increasingly captivated by Apple&#8217;s iPad, MacBook Air and other mobile devices.<\/p>\n<p>Some analysts have said the high price of the laptops, driven up by expensive components such as solid-state drives, may impede sales and force Intel to sacrifice profit margins on its processors to help make them affordable.<\/p>\n<p>Intel, which dubbed them ultrabooks, is providing support by kicking off its biggest marketing push since 2003.<\/p>\n<p>The chip maker&#8217;s &#8220;A New Era in Computing&#8221; campaign, which began in April, includes TV and print advertising along with a push in social media.<\/p>\n<p>Clunky laptops are increasingly under threat as tablets grow more powerful and are used for multiple functions, from Web surfing to sophisticated graphics and video manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>Round Rock, Texas-based Dell &#8211; which has been waging an uphill battle to diversify its revenue base from PCs to become a larger player in the data center equipment market and IT services &#8211; also plans to launch its first consumer tablet computer in late 2012.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dell Inc&#8217;s new ultra-thin laptop computer meant to rival Apple Inc&#8217;s popular MacBook Air is doing much better than the company expected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":1825,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[25,393,277],"class_list":["post-11249","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-hardware","tag-active","tag-dell","tag-ultrabook"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/11249","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/7"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=11249"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/11249\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":11264,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/11249\/revisions\/11264"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1825"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=11249"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=11249"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=11249"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
