{"id":113025,"date":"2016-02-17T13:21:01","date_gmt":"2016-02-17T11:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=113025"},"modified":"2016-02-17T15:43:47","modified_gmt":"2016-02-17T13:43:47","slug":"this-is-what-south-africas-best-paid-rugby-player-earns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/113025\/this-is-what-south-africas-best-paid-rugby-player-earns\/","title":{"rendered":"This is what South Africa&#8217;s best-paid rugby player earns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boosted by the weak exchange rate, the best paid South African rugby player earns more than R10 million per year, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p>Springbok wing, Bryan Habana, who plies his trade in France, for Toulon, is paid an annual salary of <strong>\u00a3474,600<\/strong> (<strong>R10.7 million<\/strong>) by his club, making him the 9th richest player in the game according to British newspaper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/sport\/rugbyunion\/11300999\/Rugbys-rich-list-the-highest-paid-players-in-the-world.html?frame=3576484\" target=\"_blank\">the Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A plethora of New Zealanders feature in the Telegraph&#8217;s list thanks to their World Cup winning exploits, having also defended the William Webb Ellis trophy. A number of All Black veterans have cashed in on the nation&#8217;s success.<\/p>\n<p>However, the best paid player perhaps surprisingly, is Japanese. Ayumu Goromaru, who plays for Queensland in Australia, cashes in on commercial deals in his native country to boost his earnings.<\/p>\n<p>All Black legend, Dan Carter, moved to Racing 92 in France during the off season &#8211; becoming the game&#8217;s first &#8216;million pound player&#8217; in doing so.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s Duane&#8217; Vermeulen also moved to Toulon in France after the World Cup, and is the only other South African player to feature on the Telegraph&#8217;s list &#8211; earning <strong>\u00a3450,000<\/strong> (<strong>R10.1 million<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Bakkies Botha, who retired last season, following a spell with Toulon, was on an annual contract of <strong>\u00a3390,000<\/strong>, according to a previous Telegraph report for 2015.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdlive.co.za\/opinion\/columnists\/2015\/04\/09\/a-sensible-way-to-balance-rugby-with-preparation-for-a-second-career\" target=\"_blank\">BusinessDay<\/a> noted that any one time, there are approximately 1,000 professional players in the SA rugby system.<\/p>\n<p>Salaries range between R100,000 and R200,000 annually.
