{"id":11307,"date":"2012-05-02T13:12:34","date_gmt":"2012-05-02T11:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=11307"},"modified":"2012-05-02T15:42:23","modified_gmt":"2012-05-02T13:42:23","slug":"sanral-responds-to-e-toll-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/11307\/sanral-responds-to-e-toll-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"SANRAL responds to e-toll ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a title=\"SANRAL - South African National Roads Association Limited\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1722-SANRAL-South-African-National-Roads-Association-Limited\">SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral)<\/a> is still studying a ruling by the High Court in Pretoria which brought the Gauteng e-tolling project to a halt, it said on Wednesday (2 May 2012).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sanral together with the department of transport has noted the judgement handed down by the North Gauteng [High] Court,&#8221; spokesman Felix Sebata said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We respect the judgement and will study the ruling and consider the next steps in consultation with our principals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Judge Bill Prinsloo granted an urgent interdict, brought by the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance, to stop the e-tolling system so that a full court review could be carried out to determine whether it should be scrapped.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I make the following order&#8230; the first respondent [Sanral] is interdicted and restrained from levying and collecting tolls,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Prinsloo said while he realised Sanral would suffer huge financial losses, the public would also suffer hardship if the controversial project went ahead.<\/p>\n<p>E-tolling was to have started on Monday on 185km of highway in Johannesburg and Tshwane.<\/p>\n<p>Sebata said Sanral was an agency of the transport department and as such, its mandate was to implement policy. He said it therefore took its lead from the department.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The agency is not able to comment any further at this point. We therefore ask that you contact the department of transport if you have any further questions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The department was unavailable for comment on Wednesday morning. It said in a statement on Saturday that it noted the judgment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We respect the decision.
