{"id":113846,"date":"2016-02-23T15:26:41","date_gmt":"2016-02-23T13:26:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=113846"},"modified":"2016-02-23T15:53:24","modified_gmt":"2016-02-23T13:53:24","slug":"smartphone-screens-are-making-you-short-sighted-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/113846\/smartphone-screens-are-making-you-short-sighted-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Smartphone screens could lead to blindness: study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research suggests that computer and smartphone\u00a0screens are making us short-sighted, and can even lead to blindness.<\/p>\n<p>A report published in the Opthalmology journal, predicts that half of the world\u2019s population could be short-sighted by 2050 &#8211; up from 34% currently, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/2016\/02\/22\/half-the-planet-will-need-glasses-by-2050-because-of-screens\/\" target=\"_blank\">Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The study, carried out by Brien Holden Vision Institute, a non-profit global research and public health organisation, used data from 145 studies covering 2.1 million participants.<\/p>\n<p>It found that in 2010, 28.3% of the global populous &#8211; or 2 billion people &#8211; suffered from short-sightedness, otherwise known as myopia.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that as many as one billion people could be at significantly increased risk of blindness by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>It said that the increase in myopia is attributed to, \u201cenvironmental factors (nurture), principally lifestyle changes resulting from a combination of decreased time outdoors and increased near work activities, among other factors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The study claimed that people living in high income countries are more likely to be short sighted &#8211; because they spend more time looking at screens.<\/p>\n<p>The Telegraph however, also pointed to researchers conducted at Ohio State University which debunked the above findings.
