CEO at IT services group Gijima<\/a>, Jonas Bogoshi<\/a> says that cloud computing is real and has started to change the group’s structural make-up.<\/p>\n

Addressing an audience in a lecture at the University of Pretoria on Thursday (3 May, 2012), Bogoshi said: “[Cloud computing] will affect at least half of what we at Gijima provide.”<\/p>\n

He said that cloud computing is reducing the overall costs for clients. The company head likened the advent of cloud services to what electrolysis did for aluminum, as it takes something expensive and makes it abundant and affordable.<\/p>\n

Bogoshi pointed to a study conducted by Gartner<\/a> which noted that two-thirds of the multi-trillion dollar global IT industry was cloud influenced.<\/p>\n

“Cloud has changed business models. A company can start up today with infrastructure and make others irrelevant,” he said. “Barriers to entry are no longer relevant.”<\/p>\n

Bogoshi highlighted the influence of disruptive technologies in the IT space. “There are more iPhones than children born,” Bogoshi said, adding that the power base of CIOs is eroding as people within organisations are determining what their companies buy.<\/p>\n

Gijima is in the process of buying its entire staff content, exceeding 3,500 people, an Apple<\/a> iPad.<\/p>\n

Bogoshi stressed that, despite the rapidly commoditising state of the IT industry which is seeing a flip in the human to technology ratio, “the DNA of people cannot be changed overnight.”<\/p>\n

Bogoshi encouraged partnerships between government, private and education institutions to improve the current knowledge economy in South Africa. “As a country, we are going backwards.”<\/p>\n
