{"id":11451,"date":"2012-05-03T14:52:38","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T12:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=11451"},"modified":"2012-05-03T20:30:44","modified_gmt":"2012-05-03T18:30:44","slug":"sa-mobile-subscriber-numbers-compared","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/11451\/sa-mobile-subscriber-numbers-compared\/","title":{"rendered":"SA mobile subscriber numbers compared"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ahead of <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN&#8217;s<\/a> release of its subscriber numbers on Friday (3 May 2012) and\u00a0<a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\">Vodacom&#8217;s<\/a> annual results announcement (21 May 2012), BusinessTech looks at how South Africa&#8217;s mobile subscriber pie chart is currently divided.<\/p>\n<p>The data is based on local operators&#8217; last-reported subscriber figures.<\/p>\n<p>In its last reporting period\u00a0for the year ended December\u00a02011, MTN said its South African operation performed well upping its subscriber base\u00a0by 16.9%, \u00a0mainly due to growth of 17.6% in the\u00a0prepaid segment to 18.2 million subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Group subscribers improved 16.2% to 164.5 million, MTN said in March.<\/p>\n<p>And back in October, to show quarterly data, MTN said it recorded 158.59 million subscribers at the end of September 2011.\u00a0In\u00a0South Africa it increased its subscriber base by 5.9% to 20.968 million for the quarter.<\/p>\n<p>For Vodacom,\u00a0for the quarter ended December 2011, it announced record net customer additions of five million in the quarter, with group customers up 27.3% to 52.9 million.
