{"id":11510,"date":"2012-05-04T01:19:08","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T23:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=11510"},"modified":"2012-05-07T11:24:26","modified_gmt":"2012-05-07T09:24:26","slug":"yahoo-ceo-accused-of-faking-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/11510\/yahoo-ceo-accused-of-faking-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Yahoo CEO accused of faking education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Activist hedge fund Third Point on Thursday accused <a title=\"Yahoo Inc\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2002-Yahoo\">Yahoo Inc&#8217;s<\/a> new chief executive, <a title=\"Scott Thompson\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2005-Scott-Thompson\">Scott Thompson<\/a>, of padding his educational record, and Yahoo called the discrepancy an &#8220;inadvertent error.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thompson claims to hold a bachelor&#8217;s degree in accounting and computer science from Stonehill College near Boston but he &#8220;embellished his academic credentials,&#8221; as the CEO&#8217;s degree is in accounting only, Third Point&#8217;s founder and chief executive, Dan Loeb, wrote in a letter to Yahoo&#8217;s board on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Stonehill College informed us that it did not begin awarding computer science degrees until 1983 &#8211; four years after Mr. Thompson graduated,&#8221; Loeb said. Third Point is a large Yahoo investor that has publicly battled the Internet company&#8217;s board in the past.<\/p>\n<p>A Yahoo spokesman called the discrepancy an &#8220;inadvertent error.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Scott Thompson received a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a major in accounting from Stonehill college,&#8221; the spokesman said in an emailed statement. &#8220;There was an inadvertent error that stated Mr. Thompson also holds a degree in computer science.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yahoo reiterated its confidence in its CEO, saying he is a &#8220;highly qualified executive with a successful track record leading large consumer technology companies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The letter represents the latest salvo from Third Point, whose 5.8 percent stake in Yahoo ranks it among the company&#8217;s largest institutional shareholders.
