The South African government is cracking down on Uber taxis\u00a0operating without meter licences, according to a report in the Sunday Times.<\/p>\n
Cabinet has approved\u00a0a bill that \u201cempowers traffic authorities to impound Uber taxis\u201d operating without a meter licence \u2013 required by\u00a0metered taxi operators in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe regulation comes in the wake of protests by metered taxi operators concerned about Uber\u2019s operations, including that it is not licensed,\u201d stated the report.<\/p>\n
The Sunday Times said Canada has similar regulations, while Paris and London are also setting up\u00a0strong regulations on the service.<\/p>\n
\u201cUber Africa proposed that the bill include a category called \u201ctransport network operator\u201d to regulate drivers who used the Internet to solicit passengers, but this was rejected by the cabinet,\u201d said the report.<\/p>\n
Uber said it would continue to engage with local authorities on the matter.<\/p>\n
