{"id":116110,"date":"2016-03-09T17:01:57","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T15:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=116110"},"modified":"2016-03-09T17:04:14","modified_gmt":"2016-03-09T15:04:14","slug":"no-shortage-of-interested-buyers-for-barclays-africa-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/116110\/no-shortage-of-interested-buyers-for-barclays-africa-report\/","title":{"rendered":"No shortage of interested buyers for Barclays Africa: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barclays Africa Group claims there is no lack of interest from buyers seeking a stake in the company after Barclays announced that it will be selling down its stake to less than 20% over the next two to three years, according to a report by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-03-09\/barclays-africa-sees-no-shortage-of-interested-buyers-for-stake\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Barclays Africa Deputy CEO David Hodnett told the financial paper that Barclay&#8217;s interest, would not be \u201csold in the short term and a number of players will have a say in the process\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hodnett cautioned that it was too early to speculate on how Barclays will sell its shares, but pointed out that regulators will be looking for investors who offer \u201clong-term stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barclays currently has a 62.3% stake in Barclays Africa, which trades as Absa in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/81c98d48-e16b-11e5-8d9b-e88a2a889797.html#axzz41v84lge9\" target=\"_blank\">Financial Times<\/a> recently reported that Barclays may already have a willing bidder in former CEO,\u00a0Bob Diamond, for Barclays Africa\u2019s assets outside of South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>However, Hodnett told Bloomberg that Diamond has not directly approached the African lender on buying shares in the company.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, reports suggested that Old Mutual is planning to split itself up into standalone companies, including its stake in Nedbank, South Africa&#8217;s fourth largest bank.<\/p>\n<p>Economists.co.za chief economist Mike Schussler told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fin24.com\/Companies\/Financial-Services\/old-mutual-break-up-details-will-be-unveiled-soon-20160306\" target=\"_blank\">Fin24<\/a> suggested that <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/115636\/old-mutual-split-could-lead-to-nedbank-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nedbank <\/a>could ultimately become an acquisition target.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the bank is a good bank, but the feeling is that they have not done enough in Africa.
