{"id":117424,"date":"2016-03-20T19:30:47","date_gmt":"2016-03-20T17:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=117424"},"modified":"2016-03-18T17:38:40","modified_gmt":"2016-03-18T15:38:40","slug":"how-much-time-you-spend-paying-taxes-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/117424\/how-much-time-you-spend-paying-taxes-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How much time you spend paying taxes in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Code for South Africa has released a<a href=\"http:\/\/code4sa.org\/taxclock\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 2016 tax clock<\/a> which calculates how much time in your day you spend working to pay taxes &#8211; and how much time you spend working for yourself.<\/p>\n<p>The tool is intended to be educational &#8211; part of Code for South Africa\u2019s mandate of promoting informed decision making to drive positive social change and support active citizenry.<\/p>\n<p>Taking an average annual salary of R178,000, an employee would be spending 10 minutes of each day servicing the country&#8217;s national debt.<\/p>\n<p>16 minutes of the work day are working towards Basic Education, while 13 minutes go to local government and housing.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how an average South African&#8217;s 9am to 5pm work day is broken down, in terms of tax:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>25 seconds<\/strong> &#8211; Unallocated reserves<\/li>\n<li><strong>1 minute<\/strong> &#8211; Science, technology and the environment<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Agriculuture, rural development and land reform<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Trade and industry<\/li>\n<li><strong>3 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Law, courts and prisons<\/li>\n<li><strong>4 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Defence and state security<\/li>\n<li><strong>5 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Higher education and training<\/li>\n<li><strong>5 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Employment and labour affairs<\/li>\n<li><strong>5 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; General public services<\/li>\n<li><strong>6 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Economic infrastructure<\/li>\n<li><strong>6 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Police services<\/li>\n<li><strong>10 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; National debt<\/li>\n<li><strong>12 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Social grants<\/li>\n<li><strong>12 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Health<\/li>\n<li><strong>13 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Local government and housing<\/li>\n<li><strong>16 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; Basic education<\/li>\n<li><strong>6 hours, 17 minutes<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a0Working for yourself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The time spent changes depending on your tax bracket &#8211; for instance, a high earner will spend far more\u00a0of their time working for government, and less time for themselves, with almost 2 full more hours dedicated to paying taxes.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingalpha.com\/2016\/02\/25\/the-sa-taxpayer-class-of-20162017-nationalbudget\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rolling Alpha<\/a>, &#8220;rich&#8221; taxpayers (who earn over R500,000 a year) make up about 1.75% of the population and pay 64% of the country&#8217;s total income tax.
