{"id":118390,"date":"2016-03-30T19:30:34","date_gmt":"2016-03-30T17:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=118390"},"modified":"2016-03-30T16:43:50","modified_gmt":"2016-03-30T14:43:50","slug":"this-one-graph-shows-that-south-africans-are-leaving-the-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/118390\/this-one-graph-shows-that-south-africans-are-leaving-the-country\/","title":{"rendered":"This one graph shows that South Africans are leaving the country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The number of people selling their homes in South Africa in order to emigrate, increased steadily in 2015, data published by FNB shows.<\/p>\n<p>It follows a report published in February, by New World Wealth, which showed that almost 1,000 South African millionaires\u00a0left\u00a0the country in 2015 as a weak local currency has taken a toll on their fortunes.<\/p>\n<p>NWW conducted a survey questioning why the wealthy were leaving. The respondents said that financial concerns were the main reason to leave \u2013 but social issues also played a big part.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the primary reasons millionaires are leaving:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Financial concerns.<\/li>\n<li>Inability to deal with changing social dynamics in SA.<\/li>\n<li>Concerns for children\u2019s future \u2013 particularly around schooling and universities.<\/li>\n<li>Crime \u2013 rape and hijacking concerns were highlighted.<\/li>\n<li>BEE requirements in doing business.<\/li>\n<li>Concerns that someone in their family may contract HIV\/AIDS due to prevalence of virus in SA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2015, a report by <a href=\"http:\/\/assets.in-cdn.net\/static\/bundles\/internationsexpatinsider\/pdf\/expat_insider_2015_the_internations_survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">InterNations Expat Insider<\/a> shed some light on the profile of South African expats.<\/p>\n<p>It found that the general profile of the South African expat indicated that around half are skilled employees or managers \u2013 and a quarter identify as being in top management positions.<\/p>\n<p>According to InterNations, 70% of South African expats are generally satisfied with leaving the country, with only 13% feeling dissatisfied with their decision.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, personal safety and crime considerations are the biggest push factors.<\/p>\n<p>The other top leading factors are the country\u2019s high cost of living, as well as the economy and labour market.<\/p>\n<p>South African consumers are in for a shock in April when a flurry of price hikes are set to be implemented including electricity, fuel, and food, while the Reserve Bank also raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 7%, following a 50 basis points hike in January.<\/p>\n<p>FNB property economist John Loos said: &#8220;We have seen the estimated percentage of emigration-related selling creeping slightly higher, from a low of 2% of total selling in Q3 2013 to 4.4% by Q4 2015.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selling-to-emigrate.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-118396\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-118396 size-new-size\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selling-to-emigrate-640x389.png\" alt=\"Selling to emigrate\" width=\"640\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selling-to-emigrate-640x389.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selling-to-emigrate-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selling-to-emigrate-768x467.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Selling-to-emigrate.png 968w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Emigration related selling of residential property hit a peak of 20% at the back end of 2008.
