EFF leader Julius Malema says that Parliament must be dissolved and has called for early general elections to be held to vote in new leadership.<\/p>\n
Malema was briefing the media and supporters following a Constitutional Court ruling that President Jacob Zuma and the National Assembly had violated the constitution by failing to take action on Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela’s report on Nkandla.<\/p>\n
“That parliament, we don\u2019t trust it. That parliament was supposed to be dissolved now. It has permanently violated the Constitution,” Malema said.<\/p>\n
“We must call for an election. That parliament has failed our people. The executive and parliament have failed. Why must we continue with failed institutions?”<\/p>\n
Malema\u00a0called on Zuma to step down with immediate effect, and said that, failing that, the EFF would move to have him impeached.<\/p>\n
“How can you violate the Constitution and think you can be entrusted with the responsibility to protect the constitution?\u00a0We must all live by the Constitution. I doubt Zuma has even read this book. He has no capacity,” he said.<\/p>\n
If the ANC would not step up and recall Zuma, Malema said it was up to South Africans to take to the streets and remove him themselves.<\/p>\n
The EFF along with the DA brought the Nkandla matter before the Constitutional Court, though the party’s leader accused the DA of trying to take credit for its case.<\/p>\n
The party also pointed out that the DA was complicit in the corruption of parliament as it chose to engage with the National Assembly, while the EFF refused on the basis of unconstitutionality.<\/p>\n
Despite this, Malema said the cause to remove Zuma from power extended beyond political and racial lines, and that South Africans should unite against him.<\/p>\n
“All political parties must come together in defence of the Constitution. We don\u2019t care who organises or leads that march.\u00a0You have our 100% support to march for the removal of Zuma,” he said.<\/p>\n
The DA, meanwhile, says it has begun the process to impeach president, with party leader Mmusi Maimane having written to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, notifying her of the move.<\/p>\n
In response the the Court ruling, the ANC said that it has noted and respects the ruling, but would provide further comment at a later time, after it has had the chance to go over the ruling in detail.<\/p>\n
