{"id":118999,"date":"2016-04-04T19:16:52","date_gmt":"2016-04-04T17:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=118999"},"modified":"2016-04-04T18:20:16","modified_gmt":"2016-04-04T16:20:16","slug":"how-much-money-mayors-ministers-and-members-of-parliament-get-paid-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/118999\/how-much-money-mayors-ministers-and-members-of-parliament-get-paid-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How much money kings, mayors, and MPs get paid in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Jacob Zuma, along with all other public office bearers received a pay rise which kicked in on 1 April, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2016, Zuma increased the salaries of political office bearers across the country by 4.4%, with a few exceptions.<\/p>\n<p>The increase was below the 5% suggested by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers, due to the current economic climate.<\/p>\n<p>In March, National Assembly then approved a 5% salary hike for the president, taking his annual salary to R2.87 million per year.<\/p>\n<p>As many as 172 MPs voted in favour of the increase, while 81 voted against, and two abstentions were recorded.<\/p>\n<p>President Zuma is one of the best-paid global leaders despite the country&#8217;s declining economic performance under his leadership.
