their ID smart cards online.

South African citizens aged 30-35 may now apply for their passport or Smart ID card online, at a cost of R140 for the ID, and R400 for a passport.

Home Affairs first announced what it referred to as its e-Channel portal in 2015, and trialled the system with a number of major banks.

The banks taking part in the trial include Absa, FNB, Standard Bank, and Nedbank.

It lets citizens submit applications for their Smart ID and passport, upload supporting documents, pay their application fees, and schedule branch visits.

After your application is submitted, a visit to a Home Affairs or supported bank branch is needed to submit your fingerprints and have your photograph taken.

The department will then send you an SMS when your smart ID or passport is ready for collection.

Home Affairs said it will open its eHomeAffairs service to more citizens soon.

Around <a
