{"id":11967,"date":"2012-05-09T10:34:33","date_gmt":"2012-05-09T08:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=11967"},"modified":"2012-05-09T11:51:49","modified_gmt":"2012-05-09T09:51:49","slug":"public-protector-to-assess-da-e-toll-request","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/11967\/public-protector-to-assess-da-e-toll-request\/","title":{"rendered":"Public protector to assess DA e-toll request"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Public Protector <a title=\"Thuli Madonsela\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2621-Thuli-Madonsela\">Thuli Madonsela<\/a> has agreed to consider the DA&#8217;s request for a probe into the Gauteng e-tolling contracts, the party said on Wednesday (9 May 2012).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has responded to my request for an investigation into the Gauteng e-toll contracts, including a possible link with arms deal corruption,&#8221; <a title=\"DA - Democratic Alliance\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1696-DA-Democratic-Alliance\">Democratic Alliance<\/a> Gauteng caucus leader Jack Bloom said.<\/p>\n<p>He received an e-mail from her on Wednesday morning to say the matter would be assessed to establish jurisdiction and merit, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like the arms deal, questions about possible corruption in the e-toll contracts will not go away until there is a credible investigation,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Speculation that something is being hidden has increased with the unexplained resignation of [<a title=\"South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1722-SANRAL-South-African-National-Roads-Association-Limited\">SA National Roads Agency Limited<\/a>] CEO <a title=\"Nazir Alli\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1735-Nazir-Alli\">Nazir Alli<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The truth needs to come out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The protector&#8217;s spokeswoman Kgalalelo Msibi confirmed the communication with Bloom.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the DA said it had asked for an investigation on the grounds that suspicion was high that politically-connected people may have benefited from the plan to toll major highways around Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>Bloom said there were reportedly allegations of links between Swedish companies involved in an arms deal and Austrian company <a title=\"Kapsch TrafficCom AG\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2498-Kapsch-TrafficCom-AG\">Kapsch TrafficCom<\/a>. He said there were also 35 sub-contracts with confidentiality clauses.<\/p>\n<p>Alli resigned suddenly on Monday, just over a week after the <a title=\"Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (OUTA)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1949-OUTA-Opposition-to-Urban-Tolling-Alliance\">Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa)<\/a> was granted an urgent interdict to stop the launch of tolling on 185km of highways around Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>The project has since been put on hold and it is not yet clear what Sanral&#8217;s next move will be.<\/p>\n<p>Reasons were not given for Alli&#8217;s resignation.
