{"id":11995,"date":"2012-05-09T13:13:53","date_gmt":"2012-05-09T11:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=11995"},"modified":"2012-05-09T15:32:23","modified_gmt":"2012-05-09T13:32:23","slug":"best-and-worst-banks-in-sa-reputation-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/11995\/best-and-worst-banks-in-sa-reputation-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"Best and worst banks in SA: reputation survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"FNB - First National Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1730-FNB-First-National-Bank\">FNB<\/a> is the bank with the best reputation in South Africa, followed by <a title=\"Absa Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1877-Absa-Bank\">ABSA<\/a>, <a title=\"Standard Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2385-Standard-Bank\">Standard Bank<\/a> and <a title=\"Nedbank\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2626-Nedbank\">Nedbank<\/a>, according to a new survey.<\/p>\n<p>The RepTrak Pulse survey is conducted annually by collecting over 3,000 ratings from the economically active segments of the general public in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n<p>Only companies which form part of Financial Mail&#8217;s 2011 top 20 Companies listed on the <a title=\"Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1663-JSE-Limited\">Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE)<\/a> were surveyed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local companies suffer from poor reputation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the RepTrak Pulse survey results, Africa&#8217;s top companies suffered a &#8220;bloodbath&#8221; in their reputations this year, with only retailer Woolworths emerging with a strong and robust reputation score.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lack of visible business leadership emerges as the main cause for declining confidence in corporate South Africa,&#8221; said the <a title=\"Reputation Institute\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2629-Reputation-Institute\">Reputation Institute&#8217;s<\/a> South African Managing Director, <a title=\"Dominik Heil\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2630-Dominik-Heil\">Dominik Heil<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our corporate business leaders see themselves as running a slick operation that produces returns, and that&#8217;s where it stops. We have a vacuum in visible leaders that are prepared to stand up for a certain vision of society despite the fact that the companies they lead are having a significant effect on vast segments of the population and the nation as a whole.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With its score of 78.59, indicating a strong\/robust reputation, Woolworths has way and above the best reputation among South Africa&#8217;s top twenty listed companies.<\/p>\n<p>It scored nearly ten points more than runner-up, <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a> and topped all seven reputation drivers \u2013 products and services, innovation, performance, citizenship, workplace, governance, and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining nineteen companies scored below 70 points, including last year&#8217;s top four companies \u2013 MTN, ABSA, <a title=\"Old Mutual\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2627-Old-Mutual\">Old Mutual<\/a> and Standard Bank \u2013 giving them &#8220;average\/moderate&#8221; reputations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SA Banks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reputations of all big South African Banks have marginally decreased. Overall ABSA achieved third place, with Standard Bank in 4th and Nedbank in 8th.<\/p>\n<p>FNB has the best reputation among the South African banks, but was not rated among the top 20 listed companies, as it is a wholly-owned subsidiary, and is not listed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The declining reputations in the banking sector are more moderate than in the other industries and the country&#8217;s financial sector continued to perform well in comparison to its global counterparts, which tend to score poorly amongst their respective audiences,&#8221;
