{"id":120211,"date":"2016-04-13T19:15:10","date_gmt":"2016-04-13T17:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=120211"},"modified":"2016-04-14T11:42:15","modified_gmt":"2016-04-14T09:42:15","slug":"this-map-shows-where-all-south-africas-skilled-workers-are-going","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/120211\/this-map-shows-where-all-south-africas-skilled-workers-are-going\/","title":{"rendered":"This map shows where all South Africa&#8217;s skilled workers are going"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new data map shows which countries South Africa&#8217;s highly skilled workforce is moving to &#8211; adding to a massive brain drain in the country.<\/p>\n<p>According to the map, published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/kmkhulekani35.cartodb.com\/viz\/63fe9eac-e698-11e5-a88e-0e98b61680bf\/public_map\">Code For South Africa Data Journalism Academy<\/a>, almost 47,000 skilled professionals had left South Africa and entered into OECD nations for work.<\/p>\n<p>Of the professionals, most were teachers and education professionals- 17,500. This is followed by health and life science professionals, which saw 10,800 individuals leave.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that the UK and Australia were the biggest gainers of South African skills &#8211; with the UK taking in over 18,500 skilled South Africans, followed by Australia, taking 13,000.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Skills-map.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-new-size wp-image-120213\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Skills-map-640x413.png\" alt=\"Skills map\" width=\"640\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Skills-map-640x413.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Skills-map-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Skills-map-768x496.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Skills-map-1024x661.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Skills-map.png 1094w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recent data from FNB showed that\u00a0the number of people selling their homes in South Africa in order to emigrate, increased steadily in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>A 2015\u00a0report by <a href=\"http:\/\/assets.in-cdn.net\/static\/bundles\/internationsexpatinsider\/pdf\/expat_insider_2015_the_internations_survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">InterNations Expat Insider<\/a> shed some light on the profile of South African expats, finding that\u00a0around half of all South African expats are skilled employees or managers \u2013 and a quarter identify as being in top management positions.<\/p>\n<p>New World Wealth recently revealed that thousands of South African millionaires &#8211; specifically white millionaires &#8211; had fled the country in the past year, citing political unrest and safety concerns in their decision to leave.<\/p>\n<p>According to InterNations, 70% of South African expats are generally satisfied with leaving the country, with only 13% feeling dissatisfied with their decision.<\/p>\n<p>These are the countries where skilled South Africans are going &#8211;
