{"id":12064,"date":"2012-05-10T00:58:52","date_gmt":"2012-05-09T22:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=12064"},"modified":"2012-05-10T11:09:04","modified_gmt":"2012-05-10T09:09:04","slug":"blackberry-7-greenlit-for-use-by-pentagon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/12064\/blackberry-7-greenlit-for-use-by-pentagon\/","title":{"rendered":"BlackBerry 7 greenlit for use by Pentagon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Research in Motion (RIM)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1750-RIM-Research-In-Motion\">Research In Motion<\/a> on Wednesday s aid the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) had approved six models of the company&#8217;s <a title=\"BlackBerry\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1752-BlackBerry\">BlackBerry<\/a> 7 for use on its networks, extending a long relationship with the smartphone known for its tight security.<\/p>\n<p>The approval will allow RIM&#8217;s single largest customer to upgrade to the Canadian smartphone maker&#8217;s latest phones as it waits for the launch of its next-generation BlackBerry 10 devices later this year.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Army and other Defense Department personnel have long used BlackBerry phones, but each new version of the device requires testing before authorities can approve its use in sensitive roles where a data breach could endanger national security.<\/p>\n<p>The department &#8211; which manages U.S. military forces &#8211; had previously relied on BlackBerry devices using earlier versions of the operating system, which are bogged down by a relatively slow Internet browser and other shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>The department is also working to introduce a mobile device using a hardened version of <a title=\"Google Inc\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1719-Google\">Google Inc&#8217;s<\/a> <a title=\"Android Mobile Oerating System\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1754-Android\">Android<\/a> software. RIM has said around 250,000 BlackBerry smartphones are used in the department, which is the world&#8217;s largest employer.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1708-Barack-Obama\">Barack Obama<\/a>, who as president serves as commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces, uses a modified version of the smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Army last year introduced new applications and capabilities for its BlackBerry users, RIM said. Its personnel can now take advantage of recent advances such as n ear field communications, augmented reality and voice-activated universal search.<\/p>\n<p>RIM&#8217;s Scott Totzke said security was crucial for some government and corporate customers.
