The greater Tshwane metro is seeing tens of billions of rands being pumped into new developments – including the country’s first “green city” – Menlyn Maine.<\/p>\n

Tshwane mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa on Thursday announced\u00a0a further injection of R26 billion into developments around the metro which will provide over 60,000 jobs in the coming years.<\/p>\n

The new developments will take place in Sunderland Ridge and Mamelodi, and will form part of a wider developments in the greater Tshwane region, to the tune of R56\u00a0billion.<\/p>\n

Other projects already underway include the R44 billion Hazeldean project<\/a><\/strong>, and the R8 billion Menlyn Main precinct – which is set to become Africa\u2019s first green city.<\/p>\n

Ramokgopa said that over 8,000 new buildings have been built in the city of Tshwane over the past three years, funded largely by the private sector, which contributed R71 billion on all approved projects.<\/p>\n

SA’s first green city<\/h3>\n

The Menlyn Maine precinct covers 315,000 square metres near the Menlyn Shopping Mall, and is split into commercial, residential and urban entertainment sectors, while maintaining parklands throughout.<\/p>\n

The title of “SA’s first green city” comes from every building in the project getting at least 4 stars from\u00a0the Green Building Council of SA –\u00a0an\u00a0independent body whose rating system aims to assess the environmental attributes of a new commercial space and is based on building design and\u00a0construction.<\/p>\n

Development on Menlyn Maine has been ongoing for a number of years, and the project has already completed several key structures, including the Nedbank and Sage buildings.<\/p>\n

The precinct has been in development since 2010, with the the retail component of the project expected to be complete by September 2016.<\/p>\n

Sun International is also preparing to move the Morula Sun Casino to the development, with a R3 billion new build in the entertainment district.<\/p>\n
