The Times Higher Education ranking has listed the top universities in Africa for 2016, with six South African universities listed in the top 15.<\/p>\n

According to the breakdown, the University of cape Town has maintained its position at the top of the rankings as the best university on the African continent.<\/p>\n

This is due to its highly-cited research, a strong international outlook, and an ability to attract large sums of money from industry, the group said.<\/p>\n

South Africa dominated on the rankings, with Wits University and Stellenbosch University following on UCT as the second and third best institutes on the continent, with UKZN (5th) and University of Pretoria (6th) following.<\/p>\n

Unisa also featured on the ranking, coming in at 13th.<\/p>\n

The University of Johannesburg does not feature in the latest ranking because it did not participate in the last data collection process. Having submitted data under the current 2016 round, it will be considered as part of future rankings.<\/p>\n

UCT has adopted a strategy to become a research-led university, and has seen a significant increase in doctoral graduates and reasearch outputs over the past five years, the group said.<\/p>\n

More than 30% of UCT students were postgraduate students, while 62% of its permanent academics had doctoral degrees.<\/p>\n

The Times Higher Education university rankings is based on performance across five main indicators: teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.<\/p>\n

All data used to compile the rankings is provided and signed off by each university.<\/p>\n
