{"id":121503,"date":"2016-04-25T10:18:47","date_gmt":"2016-04-25T08:18:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=121503"},"modified":"2016-04-25T10:20:20","modified_gmt":"2016-04-25T08:20:20","slug":"south-african-businessmen-among-the-uks-top-25-richest-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wealth\/121503\/south-african-businessmen-among-the-uks-top-25-richest-people\/","title":{"rendered":"South African businessmen among the UK&#8217;s top 25 richest people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK&#8217;s Sunday Times has released its annual Rich List, naming three South African businessmen among the top 25 richest people in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>According to the paper, the British super-rich have suffered their biggest crash in fortunes since the global economic crisis of 2008\/09, with former list-topper,\u00a0Lakshmi Mittal losing three-quarters of his wealth.<\/p>\n<p>Mittal rose to the top of the rank in\u00a02008 with \u00a327.7 billion (R578 billion) &#8211; the biggest fortune achieved by anyone on the Rich List before or since, the paper said.<\/p>\n<p>However, a\u00a0global crisis in the steel industry in 2015\/16 has sent Mittal&#8217;s\u00a0finances plummeting and now he&#8217;s &#8216;only&#8217; worth \u00a37.12 billion (R149 billion) &#8211; ranked 11th in 2016\u00a0-suffering a\u00a0\u00a32.08 billion (R43 billion) loss\u00a0last year alone.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016,\u00a0Mumbai-born brothers\u00a0David and Simon Reuben topped the list, climbing from 5th place in 2015 with\u00a0\u00a39.7 billion to\u00a0\u00a313.1 billion (R273 billion), thanks to strong returns on their property investments.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the 1,000 wealthiest people in Britain are worth a combined \u00a3576 billion\u00a0(R12 trillion) &#8211;\u00a0an increase of \u00a328.5 billion (R595 billion) on last year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21787\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Top-SA-Nicky-Oppenheimer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21787\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21787\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Top-SA-Nicky-Oppenheimer.jpg\" alt=\"Nicky Oppenheimer\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Top-SA-Nicky-Oppenheimer.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Top-SA-Nicky-Oppenheimer-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nicky Oppenheimer<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">South Africans on the list<\/h3>\n<p>Three South Africans are named on the 2016 ranking &#8211; one more than in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Diamond magnate,\u00a0Nicky Oppenheimer leads the other South Africans on the list, ranked at 18th, worth\u00a0\u00a34.83 billion (R100.9 billion).<\/p>\n<p>Oppenheimer amassed the bulk of his fortune when he sold his 40% stake in the De Beers diamond operation for \u00a33.2 billion in 2011. He now owns an estate and organic farm near Maidenhead but still retains &#8220;extensive investments&#8221; in South Africa and in mining group Anglo American<\/p>\n<p>Former top SA-linked billionaire on the rank &#8211; SA-born Swazi businessman\u00a0Nathan Kirsh\u00a0was ranked 21st with a net worth of\u00a0\u00a34.37\u00a0billion (R91.3 billion).<\/p>\n<p>Debuting\u00a0on the list,\u00a0retail mogul Christo Wiese was ranked at 22nd, worth\u00a0\u00a34.33 billion (R90.4 billion).<\/p>\n<div class=\"bt_table\">\n<div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\"
