{"id":121636,"date":"2016-04-27T19:30:40","date_gmt":"2016-04-27T17:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=121636"},"modified":"2016-04-26T17:38:50","modified_gmt":"2016-04-26T15:38:50","slug":"south-africans-say-life-was-better-before-anc-took-over-poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/121636\/south-africans-say-life-was-better-before-anc-took-over-poll\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africans say life was better before ANC took over: poll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new poll finds that fewer South Africans believe that life has improved since 1994, than those who believe that life was better before the ANC government took over.<\/p>\n<p>Public opinion data from the 2015 <a href=\"http:\/\/afrobarometer.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/Dispatches\/ab_r6_dispatchno82_south_africa_changes_since_1994.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Afrobarometer survey<\/a> in South Africa show that citizens<br \/>\nrate the current political system more highly than apartheid, as they have done since the first survey in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>The Afrobarometer team in South Africa, led by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation\u00a0 (IJR) and Plus 94 Research, interviewed 2,400 adult South Africans in August and September 2015<\/p>\n<p>However, a majority of South Africans believe that the country has failed to advance on<br \/>\na range of socioeconomic indicators, including personal safety, economic circumstances, employment opportunities, racial relations, and disparities between rich and poor.<\/p>\n<p>On average, less than four in 10 citizens (37%) believe that these conditions are \u201cbetter\u201d or \u201cmuch better\u201d than in 1994, while six in 10 (62%) say they have either stayed the same or deteriorated.<\/p>\n<p>The largest proportion of respondents see an improvement in race relations (52%), followed by safety (42%), economic circumstances (41%), and employment (30%). Only 17% perceive an improvement in differences between the rich and the poor.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Changes-in-socioeconomic-conditions-2015.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-121654\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Changes-in-socioeconomic-conditions-2015.png\" alt=\"Changes in socioeconomic conditions 2015\" width=\"664\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Changes-in-socioeconomic-conditions-2015.png 664w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Changes-in-socioeconomic-conditions-2015-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Changes-in-socioeconomic-conditions-2015-640x347.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, African National Congress (ANC) supporters are significantly more likely to believe that these conditions have improved than supporters of the main opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA) (41% vs. 26%).<\/p>\n<p>Among citizens close to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), on the other hand, perceived improvement\u00a0 (38%) is close to that of the ANC, which likely reflects the shared<br \/>\npolitical traditions and racial makeup of the two parties, support bases.<\/p>\n<p>Among racial groups, black citizens (39%) are the most likely to say that conditions have improved since 1994, followed by Coloured (33%) and white (29%) respondents.
