With the recent launches of Starbucks and Krispy Kreme in South Africa, the country has two new players in the ‘fast food’ sector, with ambitious plans to take on SA’s top brands.<\/p>\n

Starbucks was the latest big global brand to open its doors in South Africa, with the launch of its stores in Rosebank and at the Mall of Africa in Waterfall, Midrand in April.<\/p>\n

The group – whose licence is owned and managed by Taste Holdings in South Africa – currently only has two stores, but has plans to open as many as 25 more in the next two years, with the potential for 200 in the country.<\/p>\n

Likewise, Krispy Kreme, which opened up shop late 2015, currently has 2 shops open, with plans to launch 35 more stores over the next five years.<\/p>\n

South Africa’s top brands<\/h3>\n

Global fried chicken giant remains South Africa’s biggest brand with 828 stores open across the country.<\/p>\n

Nando’s which is often considered the country’s most successful brand – having opened over 1,000 branches across the world – is actually only the sixth biggest chain in its home country.<\/p>\n

The top South African brand is Steers, which has 538 stores open.<\/p>\n

According to Famous Brands\u2019 2015 annual report, Steers is\u00a0followed by the family-friendly Wimpy franchise which has breached 500 stores, and the Steers-owner’s Debonairs pizza chain following with 431\u00a0stores.<\/p>\n

Across all franchises, most restaurants have grown in number, with only a few select franchises shutting down – such as Pizza Perfect losing 5 stores.<\/p>\n

Taste Holdings has seen a lot of its Scooters and St. Elmo’s pizza stores rebrand to Domino’s, with the total of 125 stores still to be hit over the next few years.<\/p>\n

Even with a big-name pizza brand under its roof, Taste Holdings\u2019 most prolific fast food brand is The Fish & Chips Co., which has over 360 stores across the country – the fifth biggest chain in SA.<\/p>\n

In terms of food types, of the 4,841 stores listed above the majority is split between chicken outlets (1, 580 stores) and burger joints (1,368 stores).<\/p>\n
