A new report published by Stats SA reveals the murder hotspots in South Africa \u2013 where the crimes took place \u2013 and the reasons why people commit these criminal acts.<\/p>\n

StatsSA’s analysis showed the murder hotspots in all nine provinces in the country.<\/p>\n

The analysis showed that most murder hot spots in South Africa were located in City of Cape Town, eThekwini, Mnquma, Sol Plaaitjie, Nala, City of Matlosana, Polokwane, Emalahleni and Westonaria.<\/p>\n

Jealousy was perceived as the main motive for murder committed by people aged 15\u201334
\nwhile the main motive for murder committed by people aged 35\u201354 years was perceived to be money and other financial motives.<\/p>\n

Findings further indicate that the police were generally able to detect murder incidents as about half of people in urban areas, who had a murder in their household, knew the perpetrator.<\/p>\n

StatsSA said its findings are based on the cluster and hot spot analysis of individuals who have experienced murder as recorded by the South African Police Service (SAPS).<\/p>\n

In urban\u00a0metros\u00a0guns\u00a0(78,4%)\u00a0were\u00a0the\u00a0most\u00a0commonly\u00a0used\u00a0weapon\u00a0to\u00a0commit\u00a0murder, followed\u00a0by\u00a0a\u00a0knife\u00a0(12,9%).<\/p>\n

In\u00a0other\u00a0urban\u00a0areas\u00a0(44,9%)\u00a0and\u00a0rural\u00a0settlements\u00a0(33,3%)\u00a0knives\u00a0were\u00a0the\u00a0most\u00a0 commonly\u00a0used\u00a0weapons\u00a0to\u00a0commit\u00a0murder.<\/p>\n

In rural areas, a knife (33.3%), was the most used weapon to commit murder, followed by a gun (19.4%), while no weapon was used in (17.6%) of reported incidents. An axe, and metal bar were used in 8.4% of and 6.7% of cases.<\/p>\n

The results showed that the majority of households in South Africa, irrespective of their settlement types, were not provided with counselling following incidents of murder.<\/p>\n

In the rural areas, about 82.6% of households were not provided with counselling following\u00a0incidents of murder, followed by about 78.3% of households in urban metro settlement\u00a0which\u00a0were not provided with counselling following incidents of murder.<\/p>\n
