{"id":122679,"date":"2016-05-06T09:27:15","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T07:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=122679"},"modified":"2016-05-06T09:35:27","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T07:35:27","slug":"sa-taxi-industry-owes-r4-5-billion-in-fines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/122679\/sa-taxi-industry-owes-r4-5-billion-in-fines\/","title":{"rendered":"Gauteng taxi industry owes R4.5 billion in fines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, the taxi industry &#8211; stretching 42 associations &#8211; owes the government R4.5 billion in fines.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sabc.co.za\/news\/a\/e5a12e004ca8f94fa7cbf7c8166c74bf\/Over-R4-billion-in-unpaid-traffic-fines-by-taxi-drivers--20160506\" target=\"_blank\">SABC<\/a> reported chief operating officer of the Road Traffic Infringement Agency, Thabo Tsholetsane, as saying that some operators owed R4.2 million in fines.<\/p>\n<p>The revelation was made at a meeting between Gauteng MEC for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GAUTENGCommunitySafety\/\" target=\"_blank\">Community Safety<\/a>, Sizakele Nkosi\u2013Malobane, <span class=\"st\">Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, <\/span>Ismail Vadi, and taxi bosses, at the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Headquarters in Martindale.<\/p>\n<p>It follows a spate of fatal accidents involving taxis.
