MTN\u2019s legal battle with the Nigerian authorities has seen the company lose its spot as Africa\u2019s highest-valued telecommunications operator to Vodacom.<\/p>\n

As pointed out by Bloomberg<\/strong><\/a>, MTN\u2019s market cap was R244 billion at the close of market trading on 11 May \u2013 behind Vodacom\u2019s R249 billion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year marks the first time the rankings have been reversed since Vodacom first sold shares in an initial public offering in 2009,\u201d said Bloomberg.<\/p>\n

MTN\u2019s shares have declined 31% since 26 October, when the Nigerian authoritiesissued the operator with a R61-billion fine<\/strong><\/a> for failing to disconnect unregistered SIMs in the country.<\/p>\n

Vodacom has gained 12% in the same period, according to the report.<\/p>\n

This news follows MTN\u2019s recent quarterly update, in which it reported that the\u00a0group\u2019s subscriber numbers had decreased by 1.4%<\/strong><\/a> since Q4 2015.<\/p>\n
