{"id":12357,"date":"2012-05-14T10:19:10","date_gmt":"2012-05-14T08:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=12357"},"modified":"2012-05-14T11:52:02","modified_gmt":"2012-05-14T09:52:02","slug":"wacs-consortium-dismisses-monopoly-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/12357\/wacs-consortium-dismisses-monopoly-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"WACS consortium dismisses monopoly talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The South African contingent of the $650 million <a title=\"West Africa Cable System (WACS)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1985-WACS-West-Africa-Cable-System\">West Africa Cable System (WACS)<\/a> has dismissed suggestions of a monopoly and insists that the cable will create further competition and improve broadband services in SA.<\/p>\n<p>The consortium consists of 14 telecoms operators, including South Africa\u2019s largest rivals <a title=\"Neotel\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2383-Neotel\">Neotel<\/a> (through Tata Communications), <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1637-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a>, <a title=\"Broadband Infraco\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2400-Broadband-Infraco\">Broadband Infraco<\/a>, <a title=\"MTN Group (MTN)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a> and <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the commercial unveiling of the 4-fibre pair submarine cable system in Cape Town on Friday (11 May), the group stressed that the open-access nature of the cable would lead to increased competition, rather than act as a barrier to progress.<\/p>\n<p>Chief technology officer (CTO) and co-chairman of the WACS management committee, <a title=\"Angus Hay\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2738-Angus-Hay\">Angus Hay<\/a> pointed out that the chairman of the committee, <a title=\"Adrian Moss\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2741-Adrian-Moss\">Adrian Moss<\/a>, of <a title=\"Cable &amp; Wireless\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2740-Cable-amp-Wireless\">Cable &amp; Wireless<\/a>, provided a neutral element to the group, adding that \u201cany carrier can come to the cable station,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Johan Meyer\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2739-Johan-Meyer\">Johan Meyer<\/a>, Telkom\u2019s executive for global capacity business, joked that he was amazed that the project was completed following several meetings between the various rival operators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if you were in meetings of the management committee over the past few days, you will have a very different opinion, and would be wondering how it was possible that we did work together on this project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meyer thanked the chairman, and co-chairman for facilitating and ensuring that such a \u201cmomentous accession\u201d was made possible.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the collaboration provided the ability to share the cost of the cable network. \u201cIt\u2019s also important to recognise that the so-called collaboration is of great benefit to the country and to the South African consumer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the overall contribution of $650 million to build the cable, Meyer said that if each operator had decided to go the project alone, it would have cost closer to $3 billion. He questioned how a single operator would be able to pass on that cost to the consumer at a reasonable price.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that, ultimately, is going to end up in the cost to consumers, mainly by the increase in value that they will be offered,\u201d Meyer said.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Kobus Stoeder\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2742-Kobus-Stoeder\">Kobus Stoeder<\/a>, executive of global capacity at Vodacom confessed that the collaboration with rival operators in SA \u201cwas very difficult at times. It hasn\u2019t been easy\u201d.
