{"id":124093,"date":"2016-05-18T19:30:45","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T17:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=124093"},"modified":"2016-05-18T17:43:58","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T15:43:58","slug":"who-south-africans-trust-more-zuma-vs-anc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/124093\/who-south-africans-trust-more-zuma-vs-anc\/","title":{"rendered":"Who South Africans trust more: Zuma vs ANC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new report reveals a massive decline in trust for the ANC, by the people of South Africa, while the country&#8217;s president is also suffering from an image problem.<\/p>\n<p>The proportion of South Africans who say they trust the president \u201csomewhat\u201d or \u201ca<br \/>\nlot\u201d has dropped by almost half between 2011 and 2015, from 62% to 34%, according to a survey conducted by Afrobarometer.<\/p>\n<p>The SA team of the African research network interviewed 2,400 adults in August and September 2015.<\/p>\n<p>It found that trust in elected political leaders &#8211; president, parliament, local government councils and the premier &#8211; is relatively low among supporters of the opposition parties<br \/>\n&#8211; 29% for\u00a0 the DA and 25% for EFF, lowest for Gauteng residents (28%), the younger generations (18 &#8211; 30 years) at 36%.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s fourth democratic local government elections in August 2016 will be a test for the long-ruling but troubled African National Congress (ANC).<\/p>\n<p>The survey found that trust in the ANC has also waned substantially, from 61% in 2011, to 43%.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Trust-in-political-leaders.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-124097\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Trust-in-political-leaders.png\" alt=\"Trust in political leaders\" width=\"780\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Trust-in-political-leaders.png 780w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Trust-in-political-leaders-300x256.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Trust-in-political-leaders-768x656.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Trust-in-political-leaders-640x546.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/a>Afrobarometer said that with South Africa facing economic difficulties and corruption<br \/>\nscandals, at the time of the survey (August &#8211; September 2015) could have contributed to a<br \/>\ndramatic drop in public trust.<\/p>\n<p>However, the country continues to face economic difficulties so far in 2016, with the unemployment rate at its worst levels on record, and a recession still very much in play.<\/p>\n<p>The president meanwhile continues to lurch from one controversy to the next.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC has <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/118174\/anc-admits-zumas-nkandla-has-hurt-its-image\/\" target=\"_blank\">admitted<\/a> that it has suffered as a result of the the scandals that follow the president which include a controversial relationship with the Gupta family, who have been accused of attempted state capture, while upgrades to his homestead at Nkandla have also hurt the political party&#8217;s public image.<\/p>\n<p>A recent report by the <a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/123597\/anc-ready-with-plan-to-get-zuma-out-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mail &amp;
