The\u00a0Road Traffic Management Corporation says that at least 20\u00a0taxi drivers have been arrested\u00a0in Gauteng for driving without permits, as part of\u00a0Operation Ke Molao, which seeks to clamp down on traffic violations in the province.<\/p>\n
Over 120 taxis have also been impounded by police, and are being assessed for their road worthiness.<\/p>\n
As part of the campaign, traffic authorities are also getting stricter on enforcing traffic laws, which have seen close to 1,000 motorists fined<\/a> since the operation started on 13 May 2016.<\/p>\n The RTMC identified the biggest problems on the road – subject to the most fines over the past week.<\/p>\n Topping the list was the problem of motorists not wearing seatbelts<\/strong> – something which has previously been highlighted as one of the biggest causes of death on SA roads by the government.<\/p>\n Driving without the correct documents (licence, vehicle licence and permits) was another major problem, RTMC said, while reckless driving (not indicating, speeding and ignoring road markings) was also highlighted.<\/p>\n Other traffic laws that were violated include cellphone use while driving, and vehicles not being in a road-worthy condition (broken indicator lights, tyres in poor condition etc).<\/p>\n Taxis not to blame for SA road accidents<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n What SA traffic law says you can be arrested for on the spot<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\nMore on traffic<\/h3>\n
