Japanese news publication Mianichi reported<\/strong><\/a> that 1.4 billion yen (R199 million) was stolen from 1,400 ATMs\u00a0in convenience stores in Japan in the space of two hours on 15 May.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, \u201cpolice suspect that the cash was withdrawn at ATMs using counterfeit credit cards containing account information leaked from a South African bank\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJapanese police will work with South African authorities through the International Criminal Police Organization to look into the major theft, including how credit card information was leaked,\u201d said Mianichi.<\/p>\n<p>The ATM transaction data \u201csuggests that information from 1,600 credit cards issued by a South African bank was used\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/the-japan-news.com\/news\/article\/0002963984\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Yomiuri Shimbun reported<\/strong><\/a> that \u201ceach transaction involved the removal of \u00a5100,000, the maximum withdrawal limit set for ATMs, and there were more than 14,000 transactions in the case\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice suspect that a group of more than 100 people extracted the money from the ATMs, which were located in Tokyo and 16 prefectures,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/124539\/standard-bank-cards-used-in-r300-million-fraud\/\">Standard Bank issued a statement<\/a> saying that it was their cards that were
