{"id":125527,"date":"2016-06-03T09:34:33","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T07:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=125527"},"modified":"2016-06-03T09:34:33","modified_gmt":"2016-06-03T07:34:33","slug":"sa-voters-roll-is-up-42-5-over-the-past-16-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/125527\/sa-voters-roll-is-up-42-5-over-the-past-16-years\/","title":{"rendered":"SA voters\u2019 roll is up 42.5% over the past 16 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The voters\u2019 roll has increased by 11.3% since the previous Local Government Elections in 2011, says the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).<\/p>\n<p>This comes as IEC chief electoral officer Mosotho Moepya has just certified the voters\u2019 roll for the 2016 Municipal Elections, paving the way for a record 26 333 3535 voters to cast their ballots on 3 August.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the Commission says the voters\u2019 roll is also 943 203 more, which is a 3.7% increase, than were on the voters\u2019 roll for the 2014 National and Provincial Elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe voters\u2019 roll contains approximately 77% of all eligible citizens of voting age based on population estimates provided by Statistics South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn line with population trends and previous elections, approximately 55% of the voters, which is 14.47 million, are women compared to 45% men, who makes 11.87 million,\u201d said the Commission.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Commission, Gauteng has the highest number of voters with 6.2 million certified voters followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 5.4 million, the Eastern Cape with 3.3 million and the Western Cape with 3 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission said approximately 69% of all voters are located in these four provinces.<\/p>\n<p>The voters\u2019 roll has, according to the Commission, increased by 42.5% in the number of voters since the first Municipal Elections using a voters\u2019 roll in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA comparison of the voters\u2019 rolls over the past four Municipal Elections shows that the highest growth in voters has occurred in the Western Cape, showing 56.8% increase since 2000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Western Cape is followed by KwaZulu-Natal with a 54.6% increase.
