{"id":128347,"date":"2016-06-28T12:20:55","date_gmt":"2016-06-28T10:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=128347"},"modified":"2016-06-28T12:20:55","modified_gmt":"2016-06-28T10:20:55","slug":"poll-shows-why-black-and-white-south-africans-cant-get-along","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/128347\/poll-shows-why-black-and-white-south-africans-cant-get-along\/","title":{"rendered":"Poll shows why black and white South Africans can&#8217;t get along"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest Gauteng City-Region Observatory Quality of Life Survey reveals what citizens of the South Africa&#8217;s most populous and wealthiest province think of the current social and political climate of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The survey is\u00a0based on 30,000 respondents from across\u00a0Gauteng, and\u00a0is the largest social attitudes\u00a0survey ever conducted in the province.\u00a0Over\u00a0200 questions were\u00a0asked of residents from all parts of the\u00a0province and every walk of life between July 2015 and\u00a0May 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The survey provides a holistic assessment of life in the\u00a0Gauteng City-Region and zooms in to identify key areas\u00a0and groups needing intervention and support.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key metrics in the survey was looking at the psychological and social health of citizens in the province &#8211; how they relate to each other, their leaders, and their country. The survey results are broken down by race.<\/p>\n<p>According to the GCRO, the province believes that South Africa is heading in the wrong direction, with an overall level of dissatisfaction (61%).<\/p>\n<p>White and coloured populations showed the highest levels of dissatisfaction, while black Africans and the Indian population showed the most positive attitudes overall. However, even their views were ultimately converging with other population groups on the side of dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Country-Direction.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-new-size wp-image-128353\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Country-Direction-640x381.png\" alt=\"Country Direction\" width=\"640\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Country-Direction-640x381.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Country-Direction-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Country-Direction-768x457.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Country-Direction.png 920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The overall view of the current political leaderships is on a downward trajectory, with less trust in the 2016 elections being free and fair, a belief that press freedom is under threat, and an understanding that the judiciary is not free from government influence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The increasing suspicion about\u00a0the state of the country\u2019s democratic institutions is coinciding with people becoming disillusioned about politics,&#8221; the report said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While fewer\u00a0people are willing to regard politics as a waste of time (than in 2013), more people are\u00a0uncertain whether it is worthwhile to engage with politics or not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Race relations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recent debates around race\u00a0suggest that attitudes are hardening, the report showed.<\/p>\n<p>Across all population groups, the belief that blacks and whites in the country will never get along and trust each other is still strong, but changing slowly among blacks, coloureds and Indians.<\/p>\n<p>Whites &#8211; who have historically been the most positive in this regard &#8211; showed the opposite attitude, with an increase in respondents agreeing with the statement.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, 41% of white respondents agreed that blacks and whites would never trust each other &#8211;
