The Department of Basic Education on Monday said that 34.6% of pupils who enrolled to write matric supplementary exams were “no shows”.<\/p>\n
The department conceded it was “imperative” that it “institute measures to curb the high level of no-shows”.<\/p>\n
According to the department, about 40 142 candidates who enrolled\u00a0had not written\u00a0the examination.<\/p>\n
The 2016 National Senior Certificate (NSC) supplementary exams took place from Wednesday, February 10, until Thursday, March 17.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the department said it was pleased with the supplementary results.<\/p>\n
“The high number of learners who enrolled to write the supplementary examinations is an indication that the Second Chance NSC Programme is yielding positive results.”<\/p>\n
However, the number of failures was not clear.<\/p>\n
The department said 115 966 full-time and 816 part-time candidates had enrolled to write.<\/p>\n
The overall pass rate had increased by 1.4%, from 70.7% to 72.1%, the department said.<\/p>\n
The overall national performance, including the supplementary results reflected a 72.1% national pass rate, an increase of 1.4% from the 70.7% obtained in the November 2015 NSC examination.<\/p>\n
“This implies that 10 131 more candidates passed the National Senior Certificate examinations.”<\/p>\n
Of these,\u00a02 090 candidates achieved admission to diploma studies and 1 313 candidates qualified for admission to bachelor\u2018s studies, the department said.<\/p>\n
