KwaZulu Natal is the second most expensive at R5,076, followed by the North West (R2,768) and the Eastern Cape (R2,509).

According to Accommodation Direct CEO, Rupert Bryant, the data is skewed towards the Western Cape primarily due the length of stay at the province’s destinations.

This would also account for Gauteng’s lower positioning, as the province is typically more suited for business trips, which have a shorter duration (and thus a smaller average spend).

Narrowing down the data, and looking at South Africa’s most expensive holiday towns, Plettenburg Bay comes out as the most costly, with the average traveller spending just under R12,524 for accommodation there.

In the Plettenburg Bay listings, prices range between R80 (backpackers) and R5,080 per night.

This is followed by the coastal region of Southbroom in KwaZulu Natal, where the average spend is R8,524.

Though only ranking third at an average of R7,922, Cape Town dominates on a more localised scale by having some of the most expensive suburbs for travellers to stay in.

The tables below show the average total spend for a typical booking in each area. The average price per night has been included to give greater context, but it should be noted that travellers tend to spend more time in some areas than others, so the total cost is more indicative.

The 10 most expensive towns in SA for accommodation

<table class="table" width="100%"
