{"id":129980,"date":"2016-07-13T19:30:45","date_gmt":"2016-07-13T17:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=129980"},"modified":"2016-07-17T09:38:10","modified_gmt":"2016-07-17T07:38:10","slug":"shocking-difference-in-pay-between-black-and-white-professionals-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/129980\/shocking-difference-in-pay-between-black-and-white-professionals-in-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"Shocking pay difference between black and white professionals in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New data shows a massive difference between the median pay of black and white professionals in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.analyticohr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Analytico<\/a>, a data and earnings analytic consultancy, conducted a comparative earnings analysis of genders across different races to indicate any major discrepancies, using the Analytico Salary Analysis ModelTM.<\/p>\n<p>Its findings were based on 692,704 individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Professionals are classified as occupations which requires a high level of professional knowledge, skills and experience.<\/p>\n<p>The research found that white male professionals out earn their female counterparts by as much as 42% on the median earnings, while black female professionals out earn their male counterparts by 17%.<\/p>\n<p>White males working in the formal sector could expect to earn a median salary of <strong>R21,700<\/strong> per month, while white males working in the formal sector as professionals could expect to earn a median salary of <strong>R30,453<\/strong> per month.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, black males working in the formal sector could expect to earn a median salary of <strong>R3,612<\/strong> per month, while professionals could expect to earn <strong>R9,244<\/strong> per month.<\/p>\n<p>White females working in the formal sector could expect to earn a median salary of <strong>R13,331<\/strong> per month, with professional females expecting to earn <strong>R17,700<\/strong>. For black females those figures dropped to <strong>R2,887<\/strong>, and <strong>R11,155<\/strong> respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Black females in the labour market have a greater probability of unemployment &#8211; at a rate of 13%, dropping to 6% for professionals.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Monthly-earnings.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-129996 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Monthly-earnings.png\" alt=\"Monthly earnings\" width=\"530\" height=\"737\" 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For black males the probability of unemployment was at 8% dropping to 7% for professionals, versus 4% for white males, and between 6% and 7% for white females.<\/p>\n<p>Analytico stressed that logic obviously dictates that not all individuals can receive the same salary however discrepancies in salaries may only be justified by the following factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seniority and tenure;<\/li>\n<li>Qualifications, abilities and competencies;<\/li>\n<li>Ratings on performance evaluations that have been consistently applied;<\/li>\n<li>Restructuring and demotion without the decrease in salary;<\/li>\n<li>Temp employees that have different terms and conditions of employment;<\/li>\n<li>Shortage of relevant skills in a particular job classification.<\/li>\n<li>Any other relevant factors that do not unfairly discriminate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The graphs below show the differences in median earnings,
