The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa has issued an invitation to apply for high-demand spectrum.<\/p>\n

South African network operators \u2013 such as MTN and Vodacom \u2013 have been clamouring for spectrum to be issued to expand their high-speed LTE networks.<\/p>\n

Radio frequency spectrum from the complimentary bands IMT700, IMT800, and IMT2600 form part of the invitation to apply.<\/p>\n

Icasa\u00a0said the spectrum must be used to provide mobile broadband wireless access services for urban and rural areas.<\/p>\n

Spectrum in the allocated bands \u2013 the 700MHz, 800MHz, and 2,600MHz ranges \u2013 will be assigned in five lots (A to E), as illustrated below.<\/p>\n

Each lot will have a reserve price of R3 billion<\/strong>, with lot A not available in the current invitation to apply.<\/p>\n

Qualifying operators will have to bid on the spectrum they want.<\/p>\n

Applicants will only be allowed to bid for one of the lots \u2013 B, C, D, or E. Lot A will be awarded through a separate process.<\/p>\n

Interested parties have until 15:00 on 3 October 2016 to submit their applications<\/p>\n

Those who qualify for the bidding stage will be announced on 30 November 2016.<\/p>\n

ICASA hopes to announce the results of the auctions by 31 January 2017, and issue the licences between 14 and 28 March.<\/p>\n
