{"id":13046,"date":"2012-05-21T10:43:20","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T08:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=13046"},"modified":"2012-05-22T12:52:34","modified_gmt":"2012-05-22T10:52:34","slug":"goverment-knew-about-e-toll-collection-costs-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/13046\/goverment-knew-about-e-toll-collection-costs-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Government knew about e-toll collection costs &#8211; report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government was warned in 2010 that collection costs for the controversial e-toll system would be considerably higher than a petrol levy or tax, Beeld newspaper reported on Monday (21 May 2012).<\/p>\n<p>This emerged from an economic analysis report of the <a title=\"Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1748-GFIP-Gauteng-Freeway-Improvement-Project\">Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project<\/a>, which was overseen by the University of Cape Town, and given to the <a title=\"SA National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1722-SANRAL-South-African-National-Roads-Association-Limited\">SA National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral)<\/a> in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To pay for roads through taxation, or through a fuel levy, is simply cheaper than imposing a toll on the roads, even if it&#8217;s done through an open road tolling system. The costs of collection are lower, because they don&#8217;t include the costs of toll collection,&#8221; the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The High Court in Pretoria last month halted the e-toll project in Gauteng, ruling that Sanral was forbidden from levying or collecting e-tolls pending the outcome of a judicial review.<\/p>\n<p>Sanral CEO <a title=\"Nazir Alli\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1735-Nazir-Alli\">Nazir Alli<\/a> has since resigned.
